As social media becomes increasingly embedded in everyday life, understanding who remains vulnerable to cyber threats — and why — has become a pressing concern. This study examined whether antagonistic personality traits (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) undermine cybersecurity awareness (CSA) directly or through two psychological pathways: reduced mindfulness and heightened social media addiction (SMA). Using path analysis in a sample of 330 active social media users (47.6% female; Mage = 44.36), we tested these associations in the total sample and separately by gender. Results revealed a pattern of indirect, gender-specific effects. Psychopathy was the only trait with a significant direct effect on CSA, and this emerged exclusively among women. Narcissism and Machiavellianism operated indirectly — via SMA and mindfulness, respectively — yet neither produced a significant total effect on CSA, suggesting that self-enhancing and strategic cognitive tendencies partially offset their risk-related pathways. Mindfulness emerged as a protective factor, directly predicting higher CSA among men and indirectly through reduced SMA across the full sample. These findings conceptualize CSA as a psychologically complex outcome shaped by competing personality-driven processes, with meaningfully different risk profiles for men and women.
