Abstract

Students spend their time at school for a certain period of time, starting from childhood and almost until adulthood. Although school success is a situation that almost every student wants, there are many variables that affect this success. According to many studies in the field, school commitment is one of the main variables that stand out in this regard. Commitment to school includes students' feeling of belonging to the school in terms of behavioral, emotional and cognitive aspects, as well as self-identification with the school and adopting the goals of the school. The commitment of individuals to social institutions prevents them from exhibiting negative behaviors and enables them to act in accordance with social norms and rules. Positive behaviors such as obeying school rules, having positive feelings towards teachers and friends, participating in social activities organized at school, being interested in school lessons, and avoiding absenteeism are observed in students who are committed to school. This study examines the effect of the students' school engagement on school success in the context of school social work. The study was designed qualitatively, and interviews were conducted with 15 students using the snowball sampling method. The data were collected with a semi-structured interview form and content analysis was applied. As a result of the study, it was concluded that students with high level of commitment to school have high school success and this commitment differs according to variables such as gender, school change, family support and peer relations.
