The Intellectual Topography of Social Studies Education

Abstract

The aim of this study is to perform a bibliometric analysis of the articles published on social studies education in the educational research category in the Web of Science Core Collection database. Bibliometric studies aim to access scientific research conducted in a field, introduce researchers who pioneered the field, examine their studies, draw the general framework of relevant research and to reveal the trends in the field. This study was conducted using a descriptive survey model. Since it is compatible with the “bibliometrix” package in the R-Studio software, the data in the Web of Science database were extracted in “txt” format. The data obtained were analyzed using the “bibliometrix” package in the R-Studio programming language in the R software, an open-source statistical program. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the journals that published the most articles on social studies education in the Web of Science database were “Theory and Research in Social Education”, the authors who published the most articles were Sharon Vaughn, Elizabeth Swanson, and Jeanne Wanzek, and the author with the highest h-index of their studies in the field of social studies education was Sharon Vaughn. The top three countries that produced the most articles were the USA, Türkiye, and Canada, and the USA was the country most open to collaboration with researchers in foreign countries. It is thought that this study will provide a comprehensive and detailed projection about the field for researchers who plan to conduct research in the field of social studies education.
