Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine memoir writing skill levels of secondary school 8th graders. The method of study is descriptive review. Necessary validity and reliability studies were carried out within the scope of the study. The study group consists of one hundred 8th grade students in a district of Uşak. In this research, first of all, a measurement scale for evaluating the memoir writing product was developed and the memoir writing skill levels of 8th grade students were scanned with this measurement scale. With the activity of writing memoir, writing memoir success of the study group was found. According to the results of the study, the most successful item of the scale is “The narrator is the protagonist”; the scale item that the students fail the most is "He/She follows the spelling rules." In general, it was observed that students' memoir writing skills were at an intermediate level. As a result, it can be said that the students have the necessary knowledge and skills about memoir, and they voluntarily and willingly participate in the memoir-writing activities according to the researchers. In this respect, the memoir can be used to improve students' writing skills and higher-order thinking skills.
